How did Myworkorders come about?
In 1998, I worked for a VAR/Reseller/Integration company. Often times I would complete the work, go back to the office, and handwrite one of their work order forms. Not only did I forget to get the customer's signature to close out the work order but I forgot and/or left out many of the details concerning the work.
If I was really busy then I would not complete the work order for a day or two and have to fudge the time to the best of my recall. At the end of the week, all technicians were required to account for all time, whether it be on a work order, production (In house work) or training. What a hassle!
Besides accounting for time, we had to list all open work orders and the reason why they were still open.
As a precursor to Myworkorders, I created several versions of a database to record my time. I began to notice many advantages to handling my work orders in a database. The primary advantage was the amount of time that I was saving figuring out weekly hours and creating a list of open work orders. All I had to do was type in the hours and my database would automatically calculate total labor & total travel. A separate report I created, automatically totaled weekly time for work orders, production, and training.
A hidden benefit to keeping my work orders in a database was accumulation of customer history and knowledgebase. I never had to spend additional time onsite looking at software/hardware configurations that I had already worked. They were available in my database. Besides customer history, if I came across a similar problem that I had already worked, then I could refer to my database for the solution.
I was able to provide the customer a copy of the work order, therefore including its creation, in billable time.
When I left my job due to the "Tech sector crash" at the end of 2000, I started from scratch and created Myworkorders from the ground up. Besides all the functionality above, I incorporated several other features. All features are listed below:
